ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary committee formed to draft Terms of references (ToRs) on investigations on Panama Papers’ disclosures will meet on Tuesday for the eighth time and attempt to move past the deadlock which has jammed its progress for weeks.
The 12-member committee comprising of government and opposition have not been able to yield any substantial output yet while a deadlock persists between the two sides threatening the opposition’s walk away from negotiations and toward ‘street politics’. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) member and leader of the opposition Khursheed Shah had stated earlier that PPP did not wish to partake in street politics or agitation but if the ToRs proposed by the opposition were not accepted by the government then the party would take the final decision. He added that the government wants to delay every process by declaring it as a conspiracy.
Opposition members are expected to call a meeting of their own to decide the future course of action if the negotiations with the government fail again. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan had already asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign and step down from the post of PM and submit himself before an impartial judicial commission with the Chief Justice as its head.
